Ruby Turner @ Swing, Wespelaar
It was with great pleasure I noticed that Ruby performed quiet a lot of the gospel songs of her last album "I'm Travelling On".
Ruby Turner was born in Jamaica, grew up in Montego Bay and moving to England when she was 9. Her major career break came in the mid 80's , when she was asked to join "Culture Club" and grew ever since, highlighting with appearances on releases by the likes of Brian Ferry, UB40, Steve Winwood and Mick Jagger. At this moment she's one of the main singers in Jools Holland's R&B Orchestra.
But the main reason why I had the intention to attend the concert is because of her last album "I'm Travelling On". A set of songs dating back to the 20's and early 60's. Completely stripped back and full of spirit. The album gathers some of the great gospels & spirituals in the tradition of Mahalia Jackson, and Mavis Staples.
Accompanied by a great band, Ruby brought the audience in great moods with marvellous versions of her greatest hits "If you're ready (come go with me)", "It's gonna be allright", songs from her gospel album "Get away Jordan" and "Oh Mary don't you weep" and ending with a supah version of "I'd rather go blind".
Ruby shows her audience she's a great lady with a huge heart and her soulful vocals. A wonderful gift for a Saturday night. Thanks, Ruby.
